From Strangers to ‘Ohana: Solo Travellers Unite in a French & Adventure Immersion in Moorea

What happens when passionate French learners and adventure seekers from different corners of the world come together in paradise? At Fare Om in Moorea, the answer is simple: they become more than a group—they become a family.

This November, we welcomed a diverse collection of individual travellers who came to Moorea looking to improve their French and explore Polynesian culture. Most of them arrived solo, but quickly discovered that learning a language and diving into nature together is the fastest path to connection, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

Language Learning Meets Island Adventure

Each day began with French lessons in the open-air garden, where birdsong and sound of ocean waves breaking against the reef replaced classroom walls. With our experienced instructors guiding them, students found themselves quickly gaining confidence—not only in grammar and pronunciation, but in conversation and connection.

In the afternoons, the classroom shifted. Whether it was kayaking across turquoise waters, dancing under palm trees, or sharing a laugh on a lagoon boat trip, French was always part of the experience—alive and flowing naturally.

“I came here alone and didn’t expect to feel so connected to everyone so quickly,” one student shared. “We were speaking French, sharing stories, learning together—it was the perfect mix.”

Savouring Polynesian Culture: Drums, Art, and Coco Beach

One highlight of the week was a magical afternoon at Coco Beach, a beautiful restaurant on a motu (small islet) near Moorea.

Another standout moment was the art workshop with Sophie, where students explored Polynesian themes and created works using natural pigments. There was also an energetic Polynesian drumming and dance class that had everyone moving to the rhythm of the islands, and a permaculture class with Santiago that connected them to the land and sustainable ways of living.

A Bond That Became the Real Treasure

While the activities were rich and varied—from snorkelling with colourful reef fish to weaving palm leaves into baskets—it was the emotional connection that stood out the most.

These solo travellers—each with their own story—came together to form a community. Meals became shared experiences, French became their common language, and laughter echoed through the garden and across the water. By the end of the trip, they weren’t just students—they were friends, adventurers, and part of the Fare Om family.
